Essential Driver Training offer

Before you may drive you must have a Learner Permit (formally Provisional License)

To get your Learner Permit you need to:

1. Apply to do the theory test

You may book a driver theory test by contacting The Driver Theory Testing Service at the following Lo-call numbers:

There is a book of questions available to assist you in your preparation. It is called the Official Driver Theory Test and is available from booksellers. There is also a CD Rom, which allows you to take sample tests on your PC.

Updated ID Requirements Policy for Driver Theory Test from 1st April 2013 Birth Certificate issued in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland or Great Britain plus Certificate of Identity Form

2. Get your eyes tested by an optician

Eyesight report    Form D.502
For driver licensing purposes

3. Fill out the application form and send if off

Learner Permit    Form D.201
The form may be obtained at any motor tax office, Garda station, and some libraries you can also get them at Q4U offices. You can also request that the form be posted to you on (This form is not available to download as it contains a sticky label.)

You will need to complete the application form, and include the eyesight report, 2 passport photos, a copy (not photo copy!) of your birth certificate and your theory test result. You can post your application to the local licensing authority and your learner permit will be posted back to you. Alternatively you or someone on your behalf may take the papers to the authority´s office where you will be given a receipt.

Once you have your receipt, you may start immediately without waiting for your actual Learner Permit.
